Public Announcement to Address the Issue of the Recent Tremors Being Associated with the RESDP.

August 1, 2026

The Renewable Energy Sector Development Project (RESDP) wishes to address recent public concerns regarding seismic tremors felt in Saint Lucia specifically Soufriere, one of the drilling locations and the perceived association with project activities.

Based on seismic data reviewed for the past month, several small volcanic-related events were recorded and were minor in magnitude. In addition, regional earthquakes were recorded, some of which were felt not only in Saint Lucia, but also across other parts of the Eastern Caribbean including areas near Martinique, Barbados, and surrounding territories, demonstrating that these tremors are part of broader regional tectonic activity.

Saint Lucia is located within a volcanic and seismically active region, and as such, minor tremors and earthquakes are a natural occurrence. These events are not unusual and are regularly recorded across the Eastern Caribbean, including in neighbouring islands and countries.

Importantly, the RESDP wishes to clearly state that:

·       No civil works or drilling activities have commenced under the RESDP, and

·       The recent tremors are not linked to any RESDP-related activities.

Seismic tremors can and do occur naturally in volcanic regions, independent of development projects. Ongoing monitoring and scientific assessments continue to confirm that the recent activity is consistent with natural regional seismic patterns.

The RESDP remains committed to transparency and public safety and will continue to work closely with relevant national, regional, and scientific institutions to monitor seismic activity and provide accurate information to the public.

We encourage the public to rely on verified sources and official updates for information related to seismic events and project activities.
